Women have generally had a lower status than men throughout history.Men tend to occupy leadership positions in all societies,including very primitive ones.Having babies slows women down.The degree to which women have been discirminated against has varied greatly from society to society.I think the roots of it are in biology.Men tend to be more assertive than women,and more anxious to achieve dominance than women are.
There is no evidence at all (as a comment above suggests) that there was ever a time when women were revered or given higher status than men.This is a fantasy that actually started in the 19th century but is difficult to shake off.There is no evidence to support it whatsoever.
Women always seem to have had fewer opportunities to engage in certain occupations,though women have always had to work.Paying women less than men for doing the same work is also a custom that dates a long way back,women were getting paid less than men for doing the same jobs in medieval times.
