Knowing something from linguistics can help you understand the language better.This may sound pretty redundant,but if you know the origin of one word or phrase,it will become much easier for you to remember it.
Sometimes linguistics is related to how the language is developed,thus it can also help you remember some exceptions in the grammar.
One example for German:in the phrase "nach Hause",the word "Haus" has the "e" ending is because in the old times the Dative case for German adds the "e" ending,but that rule does not exist any more nowadays.Thus "zu Hause" and "nach Hause" become exceptions for the grammar.
Sorry I cannot think of anything in English as an example.But apparently you do not need to know linguistics to learn a foreign language,it will be just a tool that can help you a lot if you know it.
