I remember vividly the first English class of my last year in school. As there were no girls in the school, we boys were anxiously waiting for the new teacher to turn up. Before long, through the door came a tall , unimpressive looking man of about 40. He said shyly, “Good afternoon, gentlemen.” His voice had a remarkable tone of respect, almost as if he had been addressing, he supreme court instead of a group of youngsters. Then he wrote his name on the blackboard---Wilber T Stone.
“Gentleman,” he began, “we are here this semester to continue your study of English. I know we shall enjoy learning from one another. We are going to learn something about journalism, and as a practice, to publish a School Weekly. The most important thing is to appreciate good literature. Maybe some of us will really get interested in reading and writing. And those who do, I want to say, will lead a much richer life than those who do not.”
He went on like this, voicing a welcome message of friendliness and understanding which sent a warm feeling into my heart.
During the term that followed, his enthusiasm affected all of us. There was little formality when we met. He never disciplined us. Besides, we were much too interested and too absorbed in participating in the discussions to have time for foolish play.
“Don’t be afraid to disagree with me,” he used to say. “It shows you are thinking for yourselves, and that’s what you are thinking for.” Inspired by his confidence, we felt we should do 译
